Accra hosts the 2025 International Pairs Golf Tournament. Accra has officially welcomed the 2025 edition of the esteemed International Pairs Golf Tournament, kicking off what looks to be another thrilling era in Ghanaian amateur golf.
Club officials, sponsors, and media representatives were among the many golfing and sports community stakeholders who attended the short but lively event on Wednesday, April 23, at the Montgomery Golf Estate in Accra.
An afternoon golf competition and an evening ceremony thanking major supporters and showcasing the tournament's branding were also part of the inauguration.
The project's creator, Abdul-Aziz Amankwa, expressed his optimism for the sport's future in Ghana at the debut. In addition, he highlighted Ghana's growing prominence on the global golf scene and the tournament's significance in advancing golf as a sport that is available to everyone. The International Pairs format has received a lot of accolades for its competitive spirit and inclusivity. Amateur golfers play in pairs for the opportunity to represent their nation on the international scene.
"I want to see this develop into a golfing community of 5,000 to 10,000 people over the next five years." In an effort to encourage more youngsters to play golf, we are working hard at the junior level and are hope that their parents will follow suit.
"The tournament has greatly increased interest and participation in amateur golf," he said. The social component of our events has drawn non-golfers to the sport, increasing its popularity, and more clubs are now including pairs competitions in their yearly schedules.
A sizable golfing population will spur the demand for more golf courses nationwide to raise the sport's quality, according to Amankwa.
There are more than 100 golf courses in several nations, while Ghana only has 18 to 20.
The 27-year-old competition, which debuted in Ghana in 2023 under LSM CEO Abdul-Aziz Amankwa, has established itself as a mainstay on the local scene thanks to its two-person team structure, in which progress is determined by the sum of the participants' points.
The competition's qualifying rounds will start on May 3 at the World Golf Club's Tema Centre, followed by rounds at Accra-area courses including as Sakumono's Celebrity Golf Club. After a three-course rotation in the Western Region, the tournament will end on May 31 at the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi. Each qualifier's top 30% of players advance to the National Playoff, which will take place at Achimota Golf Club on August 2. The victorious duo will get a complimentary ticket to the World Finals in Sun City, South Africa.
One of the biggest amateur golf tournaments in the world, the International Pairs event has drawn hundreds of amateur players throughout the years. Ghana's ongoing involvement enhances the nation's visibility on the international golf scene in addition to showcasing local talent.
