If migrants who are in the country illegally want to depart, the US government is giving them $1,000 (£751) and paid travel.
"Self-deportation is the best, safest, and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest," was said by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in a statement on Monday.
Trump told reporters the same day that those who accept the offer would eventually be given a lawful route to return to the United States.
The president has begun a significant crackdown on illegal immigrants since taking office again in January, including using contentious strategies like using a centuries-old wartime statute. There have been legal challenges to several changes.
In a press release, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that those who enrolled in the "self-deportation" cash incentive would not be given priority for detention by immigration agents.
A ticket for a trip from Chicago to Honduras was given to the first "illegal alien" who accepted the offer, according to the DHS.
According to authorities' announcement, the program depends on migrants using the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home app, which may be used to verify a person's return to their nation of origin.
They called the option a "dignified" path and said that it would save the DHS money on deportations. They said that it presently costs more than $17,000 on average to arrest, imprison, and deport a migrant.
The proposal has been criticised as well. Democratic Party congressman Adriano Espaillat, who is Dominican-American, posted on X: "We don't pay people to leave. We create a nation where everyone is welcome.
After three months in power, the president and his supporters have praised their immigration record, emphasising the decline in unauthorised crossings.
