Atalanta fan stabbed to death in clashes with Inter supporters, police say

According to Italy's Carabinieri police on Sunday, a 26-year-old Atalanta supporter was fatally stabbed following altercations between Atalanta and Inter Milan fans in the northern city of Bergamo.

In Italy, where 13 police officers were hurt in altercations between AS Roma and Lazio fans before to the Rome derby last month, there was a concerning continuance of fan violence.

Carmelo Beringheli, the chief of the Carabinieri office in Bergamo, told Reuters that one of the Inter supporters' offensive chants caused the Atalanta and Inter supporters to quarrel in a Bergamo bar on Saturday night.

He said that medical personnel came quickly but were unable to save the Atalanta fan's life after the altercation turned violent when an Inter supporter stabbed him on a street close to the stadium.

According to Beringheli, a late-teenage child who was apprehended said that he had acted to keep his sibling safe.

In honour of the killed fan, Atalanta supporters raised a banner before Sunday's 4-0 Serie A victory against Monza.

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini said during a news conference after the game, "What happened to our fan must never happen again."

The club did not provide an official statement on the event.

Before a Champions League match versus AC Milan in 2023, a Paris St. Germain fan was stabbed amid fan altercations in Italy, causing significant injuries.

On the eve of another Champions League match that year, a 58-year-old Newcastle United supporter was hospitalised after being stabbed in Milan by hooded assailants.
