FKF Investigates Match-Fixing Allegations Against Goalkeeper Patrick Matasi
The Kenya Football Federation (FKF) has launched an investigation into allegations that goalkeeper Patrick Matasi may be involved in match-fixing.
Matasi, 37, who represents Kenyan Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz, has made over 30 international appearances for the Harambee Stars, with his last game occurring in October during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
A video, the authenticity of which the BBC has not verified, recently surfaced online, appearing to show Matasi discussing an arrangement to manipulate the outcome of a league match.
"I spoke with him, and he was just as shocked by the video. He maintains that he has no knowledge of any match-fixing," said Homeboyz owner Cleophas Shimanyula in an interview with BBC Sport Africa.
The FKF has pledged to work alongside FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and other relevant bodies to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter.
"We maintain a zero-tolerance approach towards match-fixing and are fully committed to upholding the integrity of our competitions," the FKF stated.
The investigation will follow FKF’s anti-match manipulation policies and FIFA regulations, ensuring a fair and transparent process while respecting the rights of both the player and his club. Any necessary actions will be taken based on the findings.
Support for Matasi
Shimanyula defended Matasi, highlighting his recent performances, including three consecutive clean sheets since joining the club a month ago.
"When we reviewed the video, we saw no wrongdoing on Matasi's part," he said.
"Videos can be misinterpreted or manipulated, and we cannot blindly trust everything.
"He will continue playing for us unless concrete evidence emerges or the FKF formally informs us of their suspicions. Until proven guilty, he remains innocent, and only then will we take action."
The FKF has urged anyone with credible information to come forward, assuring confidentiality in handling reports.
Shimanyula also called on the Kenyan football community to provide evidence if any wrongdoing exists.
"Kakamega Homeboyz strongly opposes match-fixing," he emphasized.
"In the past, we reported cases where some of our players colluded with a coach to fix a match, leading to FIFA-imposed sanctions.
"We have internal mechanisms to monitor match-fixing, but I cannot speak for other clubs.
"As a club, we welcome any credible evidence against Matasi to be presented."
