Immigration intercepts suspected cyanide shipment along Black Volta

Along the banks of the Black Volta River, the Ghana Immigration Service's (GIS) Upper West Regional Command has seized a large stockpile of chemicals thought to contain sodium cyanide.

The suspected chemicals were found in 250 barrels at Zikpiri, where they had been heaped up close to the river and were apparently prepared for shipment to neighbouring Burkina Faso.

A group of GIS officers from the Nadowli District Command discovered the shipment while patrolling the area's illegal border ways.

News release
The drums have subsequently been transferred to the Nadowli Police Station for safekeeping and for inspection by the relevant authorities, according to a statement released by the GIS's Regional Public Affairs Unit.

In order to find and capture the people responsible for the illegal activity, the Command has activated its intelligence network, the statement said.

According to reports, the interception happened at about 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

The statement also stated that in order to combat cross-border criminal activities, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCOI) Justice Bosomtwi-Ayensu, the Upper West Regional Commander of GIS, has implemented a 24-hour manning system at all known unapproved border routes in the region in addition to regular patrols since taking office.

Caution
The GIS has strongly warned anyone involved in illicit cross-border transactions that it is still determined to take serious action against them.

"We urge everyone to refrain from engaging in any kind of cross-border criminal activity. We must either cease or put an end to the few stubborn individuals whose livelihoods rely on illicit activity along our borders. The message cautioned that there are no "ifs" or "buts."
