According to the Ghana Police Service, three individuals have been taken into custody in Savelugu, Northern Region, on suspicion of smuggling guns and ammunition.

The suspects, Gaba Abdallah Alhassan, Alhassan Abdallah, and Alhassan Abdul Kudus, were apprehended on May 1, 2025, after an intelligence-led operation by the Northern Regional Police Command, the Service stated in a statement published on its Facebook page on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

The police said that when officers in the area conducted surveillance, the arrests were made at different hiding places.

Officers recovered a variety of firearms during the raid, including a Smith & Wesson SD40 VE handgun, a submachine gun, an AK-47 rifle, and a single-barrel firearm.

In addition, the police discovered five BB cartridges, twenty-seven rounds of different ammunition, thirteen rounds of handgun ammo, two magazines, and fifteen rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

According to the statement, "the suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations."

The three will go through the proper legal processes, according to the police.

After investigations, it is anticipated that Mr. Alhassan, Mr. Abdallah, and Mr. Kudus will be charged.

In northern Ghana, where the availability of illegal guns sometimes serves as fuel for conflicts and criminal activity, these weapons continue to be a danger to safety and security.

According to police, activities aimed at stopping the flow and distribution of illegal firearms will go on across the area.
