FIFA has ruled that South Africa will forfeit their 2-0 victory against Lesotho in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers after fielding an ineligible player, Theboho Mokoena. As a result, Lesotho will be awarded three points and three goals.
Mokoena was supposed to serve a suspension due to yellow cards received in matches against Benin Republic and Zimbabwe. However, he played in the game held in Polokwane, leading to the penalty.
Despite initial reports of Lesotho filing a complaint with FIFA, speculation suggests the protest may have been withdrawn. However, FIFA’s decision stands, as such violations automatically result in disciplinary action.
FIFA's Strict Ruling on Ineligible Players
Nigerian football lawyer Jonas Michael cited a similar incident in 2018 when Nigeria fielded Shehu Abdullahi, who was also ineligible, in a match against Algeria. Even though Algeria did not lodge a complaint, FIFA awarded them three points and three goals in accordance with its regulations.
Michael clarified that FIFA's stance is straightforward: "If you’re South African, just deduct three points from your tally. Lesotho should do the same. There is no need for a protest or a deadline for filing one—FIFA enforces these rules automatically."
Dismissing speculation in South Africa that technicalities might save them, he added, “That’s not true. The points are gone, and three goals will be deducted. A fine is also likely to follow.”
Impact on Group C Standings
This decision significantly alters the World Cup qualification standings. With four matches left, South Africa remains at the top of Group C, but Zimbabwe, previously at the bottom, is now just four points behind. The group includes Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Lesotho.
Despite this setback, Bafana Bafana remains unbeaten in the qualifiers and is determined to continue its strong performance under coach Hugo Broos. Following a solid Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, South Africa aims to make a significant impact on the international stage.
