Vice President Naana Opoku-Agyemang Shares First Social Media Update After Medical Treatment in the UK

Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, made her first public statement on social media Friday evening after a brief period of illness and subsequent medical treatment abroad.

In her post, the Vice President expressed her appreciation for the support shown during her absence and highlighted the role her Chief of Staff played in representing her at the graduation ceremony for newly commissioned officer cadets of the Customs Division under the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

This was the first direct communication from Prof. Opoku-Agyemang since she was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Saturday after experiencing a sudden health issue. Following her initial treatment, she traveled to the United Kingdom for further medical attention and recuperation.

Earlier in the week, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, had reassured Ghanaians about the Vice President’s health status. He stated that she was in good spirits, recovering well, and was simply following medical advice to take a brief rest overseas. He added that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang would soon return to Ghana to resume her official duties once her rest period concluded.

In her post, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged her Chief of Staff’s efforts, stating:
“Today, my Chief of Staff had the singular honour of addressing the graduating officer cadets of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority on my behalf. This marks not just the end of nine months of rigorous training, but the beginning of a lifelong journey of service to Ghana."

The Vice President also emphasized the crucial role the Customs Division plays in Ghana’s development, particularly in securing national borders and supporting the country’s revenue mobilization efforts.

"As guardians of our borders and key players in revenue mobilisation, your role is vital to our nation’s economic transformation. In a time when self-reliance is no longer optional but essential, your integrity, discipline, and dedication are more important than ever," she wrote.

She continued her message by congratulating the new cadets for completing their demanding training, offering special commendation to the recipients of the Best Overall Cadet and Best Female Cadet awards.
"Congratulations to all cadets, especially the Best Overall and Best Female Cadets. May your service bring honour to you, pride to the GRA, and prosperity to Ghana. Ayekoo!!!," she concluded.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang attached several photos from the graduation ceremony to her post on X (formerly Twitter), showing her continued engagement with national events even during her medical leave.

The Vice President’s post was met with an outpouring of goodwill from Ghanaians online, with many expressing relief at her recovery and wishing her continued good health.

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, a trailblazer in Ghana’s education and political spheres, is highly respected for her contributions to national development. She made history by becoming the first female Vice-Chancellor of a public university in Ghana, the University of Cape Coast, and later the country’s first female Vice-President.

Her recent health scare understandably caused concern among citizens, but her latest post has helped calm fears and reassure the public of her well-being. Government sources have confirmed that she is expected to return to Ghana shortly to resume her full range of duties.

In her absence, key officials from her office have stepped up to ensure that important events and national assignments continue smoothly. Her ability to delegate responsibilities and maintain communication with the public underscores her leadership and commitment to national service.

This episode also highlights the importance of transparent communication between public officials and citizens, especially regarding the health of national leaders. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s openness about her condition and the government's regular updates have been praised by many observers as a sign of maturity in governance.

As Ghana continues to navigate critical national issues—from economic recovery to social development—the Vice President’s imminent return is eagerly awaited by many who value her experience, wisdom, and steady leadership.

For now, her message of resilience, duty, and hope, shared through her social media post, stands as a reminder that leadership is not only about holding office but also about inspiring others even in moments of personal challenge.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s words to the graduating cadets also serve as a call to action for all Ghanaians, emphasizing integrity, dedication, and the spirit of service as essential ingredients for national progress.

Her acknowledgment of the importance of Customs officers in protecting Ghana’s borders and boosting national revenue reflects a keen awareness of the current economic climate and the urgent need for efficiency and patriotism in public service.

As she continues her recovery, Ghanaians look forward to welcoming their Vice President back to full public life, where her leadership and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly continue to make a difference.
