Val Kilmer: Top Gun and Batman actor dies at age 65

Hollywood Icon Val Kilmer Passes Away at 65

Val Kilmer, the renowned actor celebrated for his roles in blockbuster films of the 1980s and 1990s, including Top Gun and Batman Forever, has died at the age of 65.

Kilmer, who also portrayed Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991), starred in the Western Tombstone and the crime thriller Heat. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed that he passed away from pneumonia on Tuesday in Los Angeles. She noted that although he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, he later recovered.

After undergoing tracheotomy surgery, Kilmer's voice was permanently affected, limiting his ability to act. However, he made a notable return to the big screen in 2022, reprising his iconic role as Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise.

Actor Josh Brolin paid tribute on Instagram, sharing a photo of himself with Kilmer and writing, "See ya, pal. I'm going to miss you." He described Kilmer as "smart, challenging, brave, and uber-creative," emphasizing that few like him remain in Hollywood.

In 2021, Kilmer released a documentary, Val, which detailed his life and career, featuring four decades of home videos. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, the documentary included scenes of Kilmer speaking with a voice box following his cancer treatment.

Early Life and Breakthrough in Hollywood

Born Val Edward Kilmer on December 31, 1959, he was raised in Los Angeles in a middle-class family. He followed the religious teachings of Christian Science, a faith he maintained throughout his life.

At 17, Kilmer became the youngest student at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York at the time. His career began with comedic roles in Top Secret! (1984) and Real Genius (1985), but he gained widespread recognition playing Iceman, Maverick’s rival in 1986’s Top Gun—one of the most iconic films of the decade.

Versatile Career and Memorable Performances

Kilmer starred in the fantasy film Willow and the thriller Kill Me Again, both alongside British actress Joanne Whalley, whom he married in 1988. The couple had two children before divorcing.

His ability to transform into characters shone in The Doors, where he gave a convincing performance as Jim Morrison, two decades after the singer’s death. He continued his success with Tombstone, playing Doc Holliday, and Heat, appearing alongside legendary actors Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

In 1995, Kilmer donned the Batman suit in Batman Forever, taking over the role from Michael Keaton. While the film was a commercial success, critics had mixed opinions, and Kilmer opted out of the next installment.

He later starred in The Saint (1997), stepping into a role previously made famous by Roger Moore. He also appeared in The Island of Dr. Moreau with Marlon Brando, a film that became infamous for its troubled production. Director John Frankenheimer reportedly vowed never to work with Kilmer again, as the actor developed a reputation for being difficult on set.

Despite setbacks, Kilmer’s legacy in Hollywood remains undeniable, with his performances leaving a lasting impact on audiences worldwide.
