Alabaster Box, a Ghanaian a cappella group, sued rapper Medikal almost a week after threatening to take legal action against him for allegedly exploiting a part of their song "Akwaaba" without their consent.

The band had previously said that Medikal had used a portion of their song "Akwaaba" in his most recent single, "Welcome to Africa."

"The first 10 seconds of 'Welcome to Africa' is a reproduction of their song," they stated in a letter to Medikal.

They claim that Medikal's song's title and words indicate that his composition is based on "Akwaaba" by Alabaster Box.

Medikal's relentless marketing and dissemination of his song on popular streaming sites, according to the group, further intensifies the breach.

'Welcome to Africa' should be taken down from all digital and traditional outlets immediately, the attorneys requested.

They also called for the end of any contracts pertaining to the track's production and distribution, as well as the suspension of all marketing, performances, or commercial activities involving it.

In addition to this, Alabaster Box requested that Medikal provide financial statements for the song's sales and list all the people or businesses who contributed to its distribution and marketing.

They threatened to take legal action against the rapper if he did not comply with the demands mentioned above.

Medikal only removed the first ten seconds of the song from YouTube, according to a writ of summons signed by Richard Nunekpeku, the attorney for Alabaster Box. The rest of the song, which contained copyright material, is still available on all other streaming services, including Audiomack, Boomplay, Spotify, and Apple Music.

According to the writ, it is impolite and an admission of guilt to remove the first 10 seconds without even getting in touch with us.

Therefore, Alabaster Box is requesting a ten million Ghanaian cedi (GH₵10 million) judgement for general damages related to Medikal's infringement.

Additionally, they want exemplary damages of GHS5 million (GH₵5 million) for Medikal's actions and for tagging their brand with offensive words in his song.
