Dr Victoria Wosornu named top dental graduate with six major awards

The University of Ghana presented the Vice-Chancellor's Academic Awards for 2023–2024 on April 4, 2025. Dr. (Dent) Victoria Dovi Akpene Wosornu of the Dental School was one exceptional performer who took home six coveted awards.

She received roaring cheers every time she took the stage in the Great Hall to accept an award, which was evidence of her outstanding performance. Among her honours were:

Dr. Barimah S. Adjei Prize for Best Student in Local Anaesthesia; Stephen Tettey Glover Prize for Best Student in Removable Prosthodontics; Dr. Nana Kwame Asante-Appiah Prize for Best Student in Operative Technique; Christian Botchway Prize for Best Student in Oral Biology; and the University of Ghana Dental School Prize for Best Student in BDS Final Part III.

In a Mirror interview, Dr. Wosornu conveyed her happiness and appreciation.

"Getting these honours makes me feel really honoured and humbled. This accomplishment is the result of years of commitment, tenacity, and many study hours. I am particularly appreciative of the help that my family, mentors, and lecturers have given me along the way.

A strong interest in dentistry

According to Dr. Wosornu, her love for dentistry is only growing, and she is dedicated to enhancing oral health and wellbeing in Ghanaian communities.

She described the factors that shaped her professional path: "Dentistry is a special area of medicine that combines art and science. I was very drawn to it since I could see how happy and relieved my friends were after going to the dentist. The change was always heartwarming, whether it was the removal of pain, the restoration of a grin, or just feeling more confident.

"I came to see that dentistry does more than only fix teeth; it also helps people feel more at ease, confident, and confident. That experience motivated me to study dentistry and provide for the oral health requirements of both young and elderly. Reducing health disparities and promoting preventative care are other causes close to my heart.

Context

Dr. Wosornu is the youngest of four children born to the late Francis Wosornu and Alice Dedjoe-Djokotoe. She grew up in Takoradi, Western Region, despite her origins being in Dabala, Volta Region. She attended Lagos Town Basic School and Good Shepherd Academy for her early schooling before going on to Archbishop Porter Girls' SHS, where she excelled in maths and science.

Her ambition to study dentistry at the University of Ghana was solidified in 2018 when she competed on behalf of her school in the National Science and Maths Quiz. She received six of the twelve trophies given out and graduated first in her class six years later.

Future strategies

Dr. Wosornu said that although she was considering a number of intriguing options, she intended to start her career in a respectable Accra dental office in order to expand her clinical background.

"I see myself actively practicing clinical dentistry and offering excellent, patient-centered care. In addition, I'm very interested in research and academics. In order to further dental knowledge, especially in areas that impact oral health habits and care access, I want to pursue postgraduate study.

In the end, I'm looking for a job that combines practical patient care with meaningful research and academic involvement."
