A 14-year-old Junior High School (JHS) student has lost both forearms, hands, and one leg due to severe electrical burns after coming into contact with a wire inside a television set.
The tragic incident occurred on Christmas Day last year in Hobor, a community in Accra. The boy (name withheld) accidentally touched the wire, leading to a powerful electric shock that caused him to lose consciousness.
Emergency responders rushed him to Kwameanu Ashalajah Hospital, where he regained consciousness but suffered severe burns. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to Amasaman Hospital and later referred to the National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre (NRPSBC) at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on January 1, 2025.
Despite the dedicated efforts of medical professionals, the extensive damage left no alternative but to amputate his affected limbs to prevent further complications.
Recovery and Support
In an act of generosity, the Indian philanthropic group Maa Sherawaali donated GH¢25,000 to support his medical treatment and daily needs, alleviating some of the financial strain on his family. The group has also committed to ongoing assistance as he adjusts to his new circumstances.
A multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, psychologists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, and educators is actively involved in his rehabilitation. He is currently learning to write using his leg and is gradually adapting to his new way of life.
Doctors report that he is now in stable condition and able to communicate. He is scheduled for a final surgical procedure in May, which will include skin grafting to cover the amputation sites and the fitting of prosthetic limbs to enhance his mobility.
