Yaa Naa Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon, has urged John Dramani Mahama to rename Tamale International Airport as Gbewaa International Airport.
His request follows the renaming of the airport to Yakubu Tali International Airport ahead of the 2024 elections, a decision made without his approval.
This appeal was conveyed by Zangbalin Lana, Dr. Yakubu Mahama, during the President’s thank-you tour in the Northern Region on Saturday, March 22.
Beyond the renaming request, Yaa Naa Abukari II called on the government to initiate Phase Three of the Tamale International Airport project, which has stalled since the completion of Phase Two.
He stressed that the final phase, which includes constructing a high terminal, is essential to upgrading the facility to world-class standards.
“We urge you to begin Phase Three so the airport can fully serve its intended purpose, including ensuring dignified handling of our citizens. This major investment must be valued by those it serves. In consultation with the Nayiri and the Bimbilla Naa, we propose renaming the airport Gbewaa International Airport,” he stated.
Additionally, he appealed for the revival and completion of unfinished E-Blocks in the region to enhance educational infrastructure.
He also reminded the President of his campaign pledge to establish a School of Surveying in honor of the Kumbungu Lana, a retired surveyor.
Furthermore, the Overlord drew attention to the deteriorating condition of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive upgrade to ensure quality healthcare for residents of the Northern Region and beyond.
